General : Police Detain 42 Nepalese Workers For Rioting

JOHOR BAHARU, Aug 27 (Bernama) — Police detained 42 Nepalese workers for allegedly rioting and setting fire to an electronics component parts factory at the Kelapa Sawit Industrial Park near Kulaijaya, yesterday.

Kulaijaya Deputy police chief Supt Mohad Idris Samsuri said that the workers were arrested between 8.30pm yesterday and 8am today, in and around the industrial park.

During the 9am incident, some 800 foreign workers of the factory who went on a strike earlier, later set fire to the building after they had stoned their employers office and burned down a car, earlier in the day, apparently unhappy after their welfare was compromised.

The factory, located along Jalan Gangsa at the Kelapa Sawit industrial park, has since suspended its operations pending an investigation.

During the incident, 75 Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) and 50 policemen from the Kulaijaya police headquarters were deployed to the scene to defuse the situation.
