General : Penang MMEA Detain Indonesian Fishermen Off Pulau Kendi

GEORGE TOWN, July 22 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained nine Indonesians and seized two boats for encroaching into the state’s waters yesterday.

Penang Maritime 2 enforcement chief, Maritime Captain Kamaruszaman Abu Hassan said two of them who were the boat skippers and seven fishermen aged between 17 and 24 were intercepted at 10.53 am, off Pulau Kendi between 37.8 and 43.8 nautical miles.

“The boats were not registered and did not have valid permit to fish in the country’s waters,” he said in a statement here today.

Aside from the boats which were brought to the Batu Maung jetty, nets and fishes were also seized.

The case was being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Fisheries Act 1985.
