General : No Shortage Of Food In Flood Hit States – MDTCC

Datuk Azmi Lateh
GEORGE TOWN, Dec 23 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) on Tuesday assured of sufficient food supply and essential items in states hit by the flood.

Its deputy secretary-general, Datuk Azmi Lateh, said the ministry had made early preparations in anticipation of the flood and was monitoring the situation in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.

He said so far, the had been no report of shortage in food supply in the affected states, but the ministry, with the cooperation of the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry, would send food supply, like vegetables, if there was a shortage.

“We have drawn up various strategies to address food shortage during the flood season, but so far, there is no food shortage,” he told reporters after launching the Christmas Price Control Scheme at a supermarket at Jalan Kelawai here.

For the coming Christmas, the ministry had listed 12 items under the festive price control scheme, where traders are required to sell the goods at the stipulated ceiling price or below.

The items included live chicken, standard chicken, super chicken, bone-in local mutton, imported bone-in and boneless lamb, imported bone-in lamb thigh, Grade A, B and C chicken eggs, tomato and green Bengal chili.

Azmi said turkey was not in the list of items under the festive price control scheme this year due to some technical problems.

“However, there is supply of turkey in the market for the Christmas festival,” he added.

On the drop in the world oil price, Azmi said the government was expected to announce the new price for Ron 95, Ron 97 and diesel early next month.
