The initiative was launched by Help University president Datuk Dr Paul Chan together with BERNAMA general manager Datuk Zulkefli Salleh at the university’s main campus in Bukit Damansara in Kuala Lumpur.
Chan, when met after the event, said the aim of the programme was to facilitate efforts in providing aid to underprivileged, disabled or poverty-stricken individuals who were affected by the disaster.
He said the programme was a proactive effort to inculcate the values of character formation, especially in terms of humanitarian leadership among students of the university by helping those in need.
Chan noted that the university had to date contributed RM100,000 to the programme, the sum collected when the recent floods were seen to be worsening.
The university president expressed optimism that the collaboration would result in more funds being raised and upcoming fund-raising activities garnering wider coverage in the future.
He added that all funds would be handed over to the Education Ministry to be channelled to the affected parties.
Zulkefli said BERNAMA would help to promote the noble effort of Help University in the hope that more people would come forward with assistance.
He said that BERNAMA was the best platform to instil positive values, especially in the younger generation, such as helping those in need.
Zulkefli said it was hoped that the contributions would help ease the financial burden borne by the government in providing aid to the flood victims.
