General : Flood: Number Of Flood Victims Continues To Increase


KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 24 (Bernama) — The number of flood victims in most flood-hit states continues to increase with a total of 62,836 people forced to evacuate as at noon today, from 58,705 people in the morning.

In KELANTAN, the number of flood victims has increased to 26,137 people, from 24,765 people recorded in the morning.

According to the state government’s flood portal, the victims, from 7,468 families, have been evacuated to 117 relief centres. In the morning, only 112 evacuation centres were opened.

The district worst affected is Gua Musang, where 6,947 people have been evacuated, an increase of 1,688 people since morning.

An increase in the number of flood victims was also recorded in Tanah Merah (801), Kota Baharu (276), Jeli (557) and Machang (178).

In the Pasir Mas district, the number of flood victims has dropped slightly to 7,776 people, from 8,754 people in the morning.

Tumpat also recorded a drop in the number of evacuees, with 3,794 victims still at the relief centres at noon, from 4,146 people in the morning.

In the Pasir Puteh district, the number of flood victims remained at 602 people.

In TERENGGANU, another 720 people have been evacuated since morning, bringing the total to 22,326 people at noon.

According to the Terengganu National Security Council portal, the latest tally on flood victims in the affected districts in state showed Kemaman with the highest number at 13,039 people.

This is then followed by Dungun (4,971), Kuala Terengganu (3,082), Hulu Terengganu (685), Besut (426), Marang (115) and Setiu (8).

All the victims are staying at 116 relief centres in the state.

In KUANTAN,the flood situation has worsened with a total of 12,832 people evacuated, from 10,825 people in the morning.

A spokesman at the Flood Operations Room of the Pahang police contingent said the Kuantan recorded the highest number of evacuees, totalling 6,231 people from 1,689 families, at 31 relief centres.

“In Maran, 2,542 people have been evacuated, Jerantut(2,513), Lipis (703), Pekan (553), Rompin (268), Temerloh (14) and Bera (8),” he said.

In PERAK, the number of flood victims in the districts of Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar remained at 1,030 people at 17 evacuation centres as of noon today.

Perak National Security Council secretary Jasimi Zeniol Abdin, when met in Kuala Kangsar, said there were 823 victims at 10 evacuation centres in the district, while in Hulu Perak, there were 207 victims staying at seven evacuation centres.

In SABAH, the flood situation in Beaufort district has improved with all the evacuees given the green light to return home.

Beaufort District Officer Mohd Shaid Othman said the 336 victims, from 128 families, at the relief centre at Dewan Masyarakat Baru would be allowed to leave for home from 2 pm today.

“Water began to recede this morning. The victims, from nine villages, will be allowed to return home, but we are still monitoring the situation,” he said when contacted by Bernama today. Meanwhile, a spokesman from the district flood operations room said all roads in villages affected by the floods were now opened to all vehicles.

In PERLIS, there is not much change in the flood situation there.

However, there was an increase in the number of flood victims, from 143 people in the morning to 175 people at noon today.
