Couple killed in Kunak midnight fire

KOTA KINABALU: A couple died just inches away from saving themselves in a fire in Sabah’s east coast town of Kunak.

The charred remains of Jumaidi Sakka and Dakati Juma, both in their 50s, were found lying side by side near the kitchen door following yesterday’s 1am tragedy.

Kunak Fire and Rescue Department chief Jaafar Salleh said they believed the couple tried to escape but died before they could do so.

He said the couple was believed to have suffocated due to the smoke. The couple’s 30-year-old son was out with his friends.

Jaafar said the wooden house was almost razed when firemen arrived.
