Murder convict Sirul Azhar Umar, who has been given a conditional release by the Australian authorities, will reportedly be placed under closed supervision.
Malay daily Berita Harian confirmed with a Wisma Putra official that Sirul, convicted of murdering Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu, has been released.
"At the present time, he has been released but his passport had been seized by the Australian authorities and given a conditional card stating that he is free to move around."
"However, Sirul must be present if called by the authorities at any time," said the official from Wisma Putra.
Sirul left Malaysia while his murder acquittal was under appeal, and did not return to receive his guilty verdict and death sentence at the Federal Court hearing last week.
