General : Najib Demands Full Probe Into MRT Span Collapse

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Tuesday called for a full investigation into the collapse of a concrete span at an MRT worksite in Kota Damansara here Monday night.

“Shocked and saddened to hear about the MRT site accident. A full investigation must be carried out immediately to ensure this never happens again,” he said in a Twitter post.

Three Bangladeshi construction workers went missing after the 490-tonne span at the MRT worksite near the former Rubber Research Institute (RRI) land in Sungai Buloh collapsed at 8.30 pm.

One of them has been found dead. According to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, the body of Mohammad Elahi Hossain, 27, was found at 2.30 am early Tuesday trapped under the collapsed span.

The search is continuing for the two other workers, Mohamad Faruk Khan and Mohammad Alauddin Mollik.

Meanwhile, commenting on the same incident on his Facebook account, Najib urged all construction industry players to ensure safety at worksites.

Clearly concerned over the fatal mishap, the prime minister said safety and health at such places could be ensured by following established rules and guidelines set by the authorities.

“All parties involved in construction must adhere to the guidelines set by our Department of Occupational Safety and Health and strictly observe guidelines for public safety and health at construction sites,” he said.

Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) in a statement earlier stated that the company would investigate the cause of the accident to determine whether procedures were strictly adhered to and take action.
