KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 (Bernama) — Within three years, inter-city train passengers are expected to enjoy more stable internet access of at least, 3G speed.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said this was in line with the improvement being carried out by the government when the construction of 1,000 telecommunication exchanges nationwide were expected to be completed by 2018.
“Currently, the train passes through islolated areas where the signal is not strong,” he told reporters after opening the Malaysia Adventure Club annual general meeting here today.
He said the matter was being studied in detail by the ministry, especially in expanding internet penetration at populated areas.
Ahmad Shabery said, besides adding telecommunication exchanges, the ministry was also developing digital television infrastructure which was expected to be completed by 2017, before ceasing the analogue service in 2020.
This would benefit users as more free-to-air television channels would be set up, he added.
He said there were plans to link public transport operators, including Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, Prasarana which operated Rapid Bus, Light Rail Transit and Monorail, to provide more stable television signals in their vehicles when the digitalisation process was completed.
