Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the donation would be channelled via the Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) which would send the contribution to Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
“Mercy Malaysia will decide whether the contribution will be in the form of medicine or medical needs related to the management of the Ebola infection case including gloves, medicine, bed facilities and others,” he told reporters here, Wednesday.
He also handed over a replica cheque amounting to RM3 million to MERCY Malaysia executive director, Ahmad Faezal Mohamed.
Prior to this, the government had supplied 20.9 million pairs of medical gloves to five countries affected by the plague, namely, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Congo and Nigeria.
Based on a report by the World Health Organisation, as of Dec 7, 17,908 cases of the plague were recorded, with 6,373 deaths.
Meanwhile, on the Asean Plus Three conference which was participated by Health Ministers of Asean nations in Bangkok recently, Subramaniam said the meeting was in concert to cooperate and share their capabilities and expertise in facing EVD.
“Asean nations will cooperate to gather data and information we have to help the West African nations afflicted by the plague,” he added.
