General : Dewan Negara: Over 11,000 PA DBKL, PPR MTEN Housing Units Sold Since 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 (Bernama) – Some 11,204 units of National Economic Action Council People’s Housing Project (PPR MTEN) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall Public Housing Projects (PA DBKL) were sold from 2009 until Oct 31 this year.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Dr Loga Bala Mohan told Dewan Negara today that they were among the 45,357 housing units sold.

“The 11,204 units was only 24.7 percent of the total,” he said replying to a question from Senator Datuk Seri S. Nallakaruppan who asked whether DBKL plans to increase public housing units to provide more opportunities for tenants to own homes.

Various efforts and initiatives were undertaken by the ministry, DBKL and Federal Territories Foundation to get tenants to buy PPR MTEN and PA DBKL housing units.

Loga said the initiatives include the establishment of the Special Financing Scheme (SPK) as incentive to encourage tenants to buy housing units by providing loans.

Earlier, replying to a question from Senator Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, he said the development of Kampung Bharu and the Traditional Area Development Plan were to chart the direction of traditional villages.

The plan covers land use zoning, density and development guidelines to ensure a quality environment and retain the existing traditional identity.

They include Kampung Padang Balang, Kampung Banda Dalam, Kampung Chubadak Hulu, Kampung Sungai Merali and Kampung Puah, a total area of 236.7 hectares.

“This is to preserve the Malay culture, artistic and architectural heritage to ensure the Malay identity remains in Kuala Lumpur,” he added.

Megat Zulkarnain wanted to know the ministry’s plans to ensure that Kuala Lumpur city reflects the characteristics of the Malays.

The Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2020 had identified Malay reserve areas, traditional villages and new villages in need of special attention to ensure they were not left out of development.
