He said such assistance from the chefs would not only encourage consumption of freshwater fish among tourists but also change the perception of some that the fish was meant only for rural folks or those from the lower income group.
“We need chefs to assist us in informing the public about the protein content of freshwater fish so that tourists understand and become interested to consume them.
“This will reduce the financial burden of the government and save cost for the people, in promoting the fish,” he added.
Tajuddin said this in reply to a supplementary question from Senator Khairiah Mohamed who wanted to know the extent of the government’s efforts to promote freshwater fish consumption, especially at hotels, at the Dewan Negara sitting here Monday.
Earlier, Tajuddin told the Dewan Negara that there was no question of an over-supply of freshwater fish in the local market as production was only 33,000 metric tonnes a year.
“Marketing is not an issue, but if you want to get a good price, then there must be promotions, including in dishes served at restaurants and hotels,” he said.
