MMEA operations director Maritime Capt Ibrahim Mohamed said information of the boat tragedy was received by VTS Klang.
“Initial information from VTS Klang said a cargo ship, MSC Valeria, that was passing through the route had saved two victims who were floating in the area,” he said in a statement today.
The actual number of passengers on board has yet to be determined but believed the boat was carrying 28 passengers.
Ibrahim said a search and rescue operation involving two MMEA vessels has been activated in the area.
The boat capsize in Tanjung Ketapang today is the second within 10 days as another boat carrying about 70 illegal immigrants had capsized in Tanjung Piai waters on July 14.
Twelve passengers died in the earlier tragedy.
