General : Thailand Pledges ‘Fullest Cooperation’ To Malaysia As Asean Chair – Najib

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 1 (Bernama) — Thailand has pledged its fullest cooperation to Malaysia as the chairman of Asean which the latter assumes next year, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Monday.

He spoke to reporters after hosting a luncheon for visiting Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha at Seri Perdana.

Malaysia will officially take over the chairmanship of Asean on Jan 1, 2015. It will mark Malaysia’s leading role in the realisation of the Asean Community and in developing the community’s post-2015 vision.

Najib said Thailand also congratulated Malaysia on securing a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Malaysia won the seat at the UN General Assembly in New York last October, taking 187 of the total 192 votes cast.

The new UNSC members will take up their seats on Jan 1, 2015, and will serve on the council until Dec 31, 2016.

Malaysia has sat on the UNSC thrice – in 1965, 1989 to 1990, and 1999 to 2000.
