Business : FTA To Boost Bangladesh-Malaysia Trade, Says Envoy

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) — Trade between Bangladesh and Malaysia will increase if the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) is finalised, said Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia, AKM Atiqur Rahman.

He said Bangladesh’s exports to Malaysia were only 1/12 of Malaysia’s export to the country.

“From January 2013 to June 2014, Bangladesh’s exports to Malaysia were US$ 140 million while Bangladesh imports of Malaysian products were US$ 1.8 billion,” he told reporters at the ‘Showcase Bangladesh 2014’ press conference here today.

The Showcase Bangladesh 2014 is aimed at reducing the trade gap between Bangladesh and Malaysia as well as promoting bilateral trade.

Among the highlights of the showcase are the country’s banking and insurance services, infrastructure, information and communications technology and its tourism attractions.

The showcase will commence from Nov 14-16, 2014 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
