General : Military Review Role In Cameron Highlands’ Integrated Ops

KUCHING, Nov 10 (Bernama) — The military are reviewing their role in integrated operations among the various agencies in the country to curb land encroachment activities and presence of illegal immigrants in Cameron Highlands as directed by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri MuhyiddinYassin Sunday.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the armed forces had never run away from the responsibility to provide assistance when needed, including cooperation to address any disasters.

“We have to see what need to be deployed for what purpose. This has to be discussed and I have yet to receive any feedback or report from any parties there (Cameron Highlands),” he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem at the state legislative assembly building here Monday.

In the context of illegal immigrants in Cameron Highlands, he said it was important to give attention to their influx to effectively address the issue.

Yesterday Muhyiddin had said an integrated operation by the police, Immigration Department, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Armed Forces and General Operations Force would be implemented soon to address the various problems in Cameron Highlands.

Meanwhile Hishamuddin said his discussions with Adenan today touched on security issues, in which he stressed on the need of the state government to take proactive steps to address any security threats faced by the country.

He said forms of security threats had changed drastically in tandem with the fast changing world and disasters that affected countries in the Middle East, such as Iraq and Syria, should be taken as a lesson so that the same fate does not befall Malaysia.

“Moveover next year Malaysia will become Asean chairman and we will also be a non permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, which can provide us a platform to promote the country’s leadership in the context of the world stage,” he said.

Earlier Hishammuddin was conferred the Panglima Negara Bintang Sarawak (PNSB) award from Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud at the state Astana Negeri here.
