It has engaged a consultant to study whether the dam, used primarily for agricultural purposes, could help increase the water supply capacity of the Congok Dam.
Johor Public Works and Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohamad said the proposal involved the installation of an eight-kilometre pipeline from Labong to Congok.
“A preliminary study indicated that the cost could be in the region of RM16.3 million and the construction of the pipeline and pumphouse will be completed in 12 months,” he told reporters at the ‘buka puasa’ (breaking of fast) of Syarikat Air Johor (SAJ) with the media here last night.
The state government, through SAJ, was constructing a 12-km pipeline from the Congok Dam to the Nitar water treatment plant to raise the capacity of water supply. This work was expected to be completed next month.
Hasni said that currently water was being supplied to consumers in tanker lorries.
He also said that the rainfall distribution in Mersing was insufficient to raise the capacity of water supply for the people there.
