Awie, 46, who was clad in a black jacket and blue jeans, made the plea after the charge was read to him before magistrate Ayuni Izzaty Sulaiman.
Awie, also the main actor in the films, ‘Zombie Kampung Pisang’ and ‘Hantu Kak Limah’, was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to Rozana Misbun, 36, at a house in Taman Ukay Bistari, Ukay Perdana, Hulu Kelang at 1.30pm on June 2, this year.
The charge was made under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail sentence of up to seven years and a fine.
Earlier, DPP Suhaimi Ibrahim offered the accused bail of RM10,000 in one surety.
Awie’s counsel, Hazman Harun asked for the bail be reduced, reasoning that the accused had cooperated during the investigation and presented himself each time he was called by the police.
“The purpose of bail is to ensure the presence of the accused in court but there is no reason for my client to run away as he is a public figure,” he said.
The court then allowed the accused bail of RM9,000 in two sureties and fixed Aug 11 for case re-mention. Awie paid the bail.
Later when met by reporters, Awie said he did not expect the incident to end this way but the singer, famous for his song ‘Sejati’ especially, declined to elaborate as he did not want to interfere with the case proceedings.
Asked on the implication of the case on his singing career, Awie said he left it to God.
Also present in court today were Awie’s friends, including two members of Wings, Joe dan Eddie.
