General : No Fake Eggs Sold In Market – Health D-G

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 23 (Bernama) — Some social websites were left with egg on their faces when the health ministry rubbished their reports that fake eggs which look real, were sold in the domestic market.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry took a serious view of the issue and had conducted an investigation.

“The health ministry found there were no fake eggs sold in the local market. The people should come forward if there were doubts on the authenticity of eggs, by reporting to the food safety and quality division, state health department or the nearest district health offices,” he said in a statement here today.

Members of the public could also lodge complaints via the ministry’s homepage at http://fsq.moh.gov.my.

Dr Noor Hisham said selling fake eggs was an offence under Section 14(1) and 14(2) of the Food Act 1983 and Regulation 171(1) of the Food Regulations 1985.

Dr Noor Hisham said in 2011, a similar issue surfaced with allegations of fake eggs containing chemical substances and shell made of calcium carbonate.

The egg yolk and white were made of sodium alginate, alum, gelatine, benzoic acid, calcium chloride as well as water and food colouring, he added.
