LABUAN, Oct 23 (Bernama) — Labuan has the potential to be the hub of the tuna fishing industry, said Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) chairman Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim.

Hence, he said Labuan should be developed further, with better port facilities and jetties.

Speaking at a dialogue session with local fishermen, as part of his working visit at LKIM Complex in Kiansam here today, he also announced an allocation of RM500,000 for the new fishermen market and business square.

The total catch of various marine resources landed in Labuan last year was 12,891,192 kg with a market value of RM217,201.

Nationwide the total catch last year was 1.8 million metric tonnes with a total of 2.6 million metric tonnes targeted for this year, he said.

He said the government was aware of the important role of fishermen in ensuring the marine resources were constantly available and would continue to assist them.
