General : JSAHMS Bridge Closed For International Marathon From Nov 15

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 4 (Bernama) — The Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS) and several roads leading to it will be closed simultaneously from Nov 15 for the ASICS Penang Bridge International Marathon 2014.

Penang Public Order and Traffic Department head Supt Ibrahim Abu Bakar said the roads included Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway from the junction of Hilir Sungai Kluang to the junction of Persiaran Bayan Lepas (both directions) from 3 p.m. on Nov 15.

Also closed will be the North-South Highway (PLUS) at kilometre 155 entry into the bridge from the north and south. Jalan Batu Maung and Lintang Bayan Lepas will also be closed on that day.

“In total, it involves 12 routes and this year the number of roads closed is less than in previous years,” he said at a press conference held here Tuesday.

He said the roads would be reopened at 3 p.m. on Nov 16 and a total of 530 people had been assigned to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during the sixth marathon.

Ibrahim also advised the public to plan their journeys on those days and observe traffic advisories and signages.

Meanwhile, state Tourism Development Committee Chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said 50 shuttle buses would operate free of charge from 10 p.m. on Nov 15 to 12 p.m. the next day for participants.

Law who is also the chairman of the marathon committee said 62,000 participants had registered for the event, and they would be flagged off in stages beginning from 1.30 a.m. on Nov 16 to 8 a.m that day.

He said the marathon would be divided into five categories – the male and female full marathon (42.195km); male and female half marathon (21km); 10km male and female; 10km male and female teen; and the ‘Fun Run’.
