General : Dewan Rakyat: Radiation From Telecoms Towers At Safe Level

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) — The Communications and Multimedia Ministry has allayed the fear of the public over radiation from telecommunication towers, saying it is low and at a safe level.

Deputy Minister Datuk Jailani Johari told the Dewan Rakyat tests conducted by the Malaysian Nuclear Agency found the level of radiation to be in compliance with the mandatory standard of the electromagnetic field (EMF) from radio communication structures set by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“It does not pose any health risk to the people, including the elderly and children, living in the vicinity of the towers,” he said when replying to a question from Datuk Dr Abd Latiff Ahmad (BN-Mersing).

The MP had wanted to know whether the ministry monitored the level of radiation emitted from these towers, including those installed close to schools.

Jailani said tests conducted at schools in Perak, Johor and Kuala Lumpur by the nuclear agency and the Education Ministry found the level of radiation to be 0.0002 watts per sq metre.

“The level is safe and in compliance with the mandatory standard,” he said.

Jailani also said that as of October this year, the cellular telephone penetration rate in the country was 143.7 per cent, with 43.1 million subscribers.

The broadband penetration rate for Malaysian households was 67 per cent, with the total number of subscribers at 6.4 million.
