Business : Strong Demand For Skilled Manpower With Vocational Qualifications – MIDA

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (Bernama) — There is a strong demand for skilled manpower with vocational qualifications in the manufacturing sector, said Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).

Its chief executive officer, Datuk Azman Mahmud, said from 2009 to May this year, it has approved 4,462 manufacturing projects with potential employment of 471,368, of which 242,861 were for skilled workers.

“Job opportunities available for skilled manpower with science and technical background are estimated to be over 67,000,” he told a media briefing on Meeting Human Capital Needs of Investors here today.

He said out of this, 28 per cent required electrical and electronics engineering qualifications, 23 per cent in mechanical engineering and another 21 per cent in science.

Azman said although Malaysia was not facing issues of talent shortage, he hoped that on the supply side, namely polytechnics, colleges and universities, could intensify efforts to address the issue of missmatch in the supply and demand of talent.

In an effort to address this matter, MIDA has teamed up with Talent Corp Malaysia Bhd and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) to organise the ‘Karnival Kerjaya Kelantan 2014’ on Sept 20 at UMK Jeli Campus.

MIDA hopes that the event, which will be officiated by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, will serve as a platform to connect employers who offer career opportunities and networking opportunities for students and job-seekers.

Leveraging on its close network with the vibrant industry sectors, MIDA will bring together over 40 miltinational corporations and local conglomerates, offering more than 900 career opportunities at various levels.

“About 55 per cent of the career opportunities at the event is for the managerial, technical as well as the non-technical professional positions, 21 per cent for supervisory and clerical while the remaining 24 per cent for adminostrative positions,” he said.

The exhibition will start from 9 am to 5.30 pm and admission is free.
