General : UniMAP Woman Researcher Wins L’oreal Award

KANGAR, Oct 31 (Bernama) — Women researchers from University of Malaysia, Perlis (UniMAP) continue to carve a niche for themselves after winning the Women in Science National Fellowship award by L’Oreal Malaysia, for the fourth consecutive year.

This year the award was won by Dr Noorhafiza Muhamad, a senior university lecturer, who is also the chairperson of the UniMAP Postgraduate Programme.

Dr Noorhafiza said her research on heart disease was aimed at saving more lives of people living with the disease.

“The research involves the restructuring of a metal surface with the use of laser. The main purpose is to facilitate the process of endotheliosis. If successful this new technology will be a great benefit to mankind,” she said in a statement from UniMAP, here today.

“I want to save lives and will be contented if my findings can be shared with other scientists. The results of this study will be able to save more lives,” said Dr. Norhafiza.

Deputy Minister of Education I, Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching presented the Fellowship award at the Westin Hotel in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Vice Chancellor of UniMAP, Datuk Prof Dr Kamarudin Hussin said it was hoped that the success would inspire more UniMAP young women researchers to continue to elevate the field of research and development and at the same time gain new knowledge.

“I am extremely proud that since 2011, a UniMAP representative had been receiving the award beginning with Dr Ong Hui Lin, Dr Hakimah Othman and last year, Dr Ruslinda A. Rahim.

“The research is not only UniMAP’s success but also a success for the medical world in an effort to help those who are suffering from heart disease,” he said.

The award is part of L’Oreal Fellowship Programme for Women Scientists internationally, introduced since 1998, which emphasizes the importance of women’s participation in the development of science today.

The programme received support and recognition from the National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and to date, more than 20 local women have won international and national scholarships under the programme.
