General : Selangor Sultan Withdraws ‘Datuk Seri’ Title From Anwar Ibrahim

SHAH ALAM, Dec 4 (Bernama) — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has withdrawn the state award which carries the title of “Datuk Seri” from Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, effective Nov 3, 2014.

Private secretary to the Selangor Sultan, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani in a statement, Thursday said the decision was made by his Royal Highness after consultation with the Council of the Royal Court of Selangor.

Mohamad Munir said this was in line with the power of the Sultan in conferring state honours and awards as well as the power to withdraw these awards as provided under the Selangor State Constitution 1959.

“The withdrawal of the Darjah Kebesaran Seri-Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (SSSA) conferred in 1992 is based on his (Anwar) actions and conduct since the end of 2013 in questioning the integrity and power of the Selangor Sultan and the monarchy in resolving the crisis involving the appointment of menteri besar this year,” the Sultan’s private secretary said.

The statement referred to the opposition leader’s actions and conduct over Islamic religious issues despite having been informed that the Selangor Sultan, as head of religion in the state, had the executive power over religious matters as provided under the State Constitution.

Mohamad Munir said Anwar’s actions and conduct had thus made him no longer suitable to hold the title awarded by the state.
