General : Prices Of Essential Goods To Return To Normal Before Chinese New Year

ALOR SETAR, Jan 12 (Bernama) — Prices of essential goods which increased drastically as a result of the recent floods are expected to stablilize before the Chinese New Year festive season next month.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said this was because the supply of daily necessities such as vegetables, fish, eggs and chicken would return to normal.

He said prices of essential goods rose sharply due to the shortage of supply following the major floods in the East Coast states, Perak and Johor.

“The public do not have to worry about the rise in prices of certain goods. I am confident the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry has arranged for sufficient supply for this festive season.

“We will also be launching the festive season price control scheme next month and we assure that there will be no extreme price increases,” he told reporters after handing over relief aid to Sekolah Kebangsaan Alor Mengkudu today.

Ahmad Bashah said those who knew of traders who raised prices unreasonably, could report the matter to the nearest KPDNKK for further action.

“We have KPDNKK operation rooms opened 24 hours at the flood-affected states and people can lodge a report immediately for the ministry to take action,” he said.
