General : Police Give Assurance Of Ample Security During By-Election

KOTA BAHARU, Sept 10 (Bernama) — The police, Wednesday gave the assurance that ample security would be provided during the nomination, campaign and polling of the Pengkalan Kubor state by-election in Kelantan.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said policemen would be deployed from neighbouring states if there was a need.

He spoke to reporters after opening the 35th biennial delegates meeting of the Police Administrative and Civilian Staff Union in Kota Baharu.

Nomination for the by-election is this Saturday and polling, on Sept 25.

The by-election has been necessitated by the death of three-term assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar of the Barisan Nasional (BN) on Aug 20.

Noor Zahidi had retained the seat for the BN in the last general election, held in May last year, by beating Saharun Ibrahim of PKR and Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, an independent candidate, by 1,736 votes.
