General : Number Of Flood Victims In East Coast States Rises To 5,985


KOTA BAHARU, Dec 18 (Bernama) — The flood situation in Kelantan worsened when the number of evacuees rose to 3,811 this morning from 2,084 last night.

Meanwhile, in Terengganu the number of evacuated flood victims increased to 1,834 from 1,145 and in Pahang, to 340 from 123.

According to a Kelantan state government portal, all the victims in the state were now housed at 51 relief centres in seven districts, namely Jeli, Kota Baharu, Kuala Krai, Machang, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah and Kuala Krai, with Kota Baharu being the latest to be hit by floods.

In Kota Baharu, 319 victims are temporarily housed at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tiong, SK Sri Ketereh and SK Mulong while in Kuala Krai, 499 are at SK Telekong and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Keroh.

In Pasir Puteh, 476 flood victims were evacuated to SK Wakaf Raja, SK Changgai and SMK Kamil, and in Machang, 39 victims to Madrasah Sungai Mas, SK Pangkal Meleret, SJKC Pei Hwa and SK Hamzah 1.

In Jeli, 635 victims are housed at SMK Ayer Lanas, SK Jeli 1, SK Legeh, SK Kalai, SK Kuala Balah and Gemang Mosque.

In Pasir Mas, 623 victims are at 10 relief centres including Chasi Mosque, SK Tok Uban and SMK Kangkong, while in Tanah Merah, 1,220 are at 23 relief centres including SK Kulim, Madrasah Kampung Renat and Madrasah Bendang Besar.

As at 8am today , the water levels in six rivers were at the danger point.

Sungai Golok at Jenob, Tanah Merah recorded a reading of 23.92 metres (danger level – 23.50 metres) while in Rantau Panjang, the level was at 10.79 metres, which was above the danger level of 9 metres.

The water level of Sungai Kelantan at Tambatan Diraja, Kota Baharu, reached 5.10 metres, at Tangga Krai, Kuala Krai (26.56 metres) and at Jambatan Guillemard, Tanah Merah (17.79 metres), all above the danger levels.

The water level in Sungai Lebir at Gua Musang was at 36.10 metres, above the danger level of 35 metres.

In TERENGGANU, the Kemaman district recorded 724 flood victims, Dungun (425), Besut (449) and Hulu Terengganu 209 this morning. According to the Terengganu National Security Council portal, 39 relief centres are in Besut and Dungun each, Kemaman (16), Hulu Terengganu (4), Setiu (2) and Kuala Terengganu (1).

There were still 18 flood evacuees in Kuala Terenggnu and nine in Setiu at relief centres this morning.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has warned about heavy rain at the orange level since Dec 15 and had forecast that it would reach the climax on Dec 17 and 18 and to continue until Dec 19.

In PAHANG, Kuantan district police chief, ACP Abdul Aziz Salleh said with the increased number of flood victims from 340 (82 families) from 123 (32 families), a fourth relief centre was opened at SMK Gudang Rasau at about 11 last night to house three families from Kampung Gudang Rasau.

“Three more relief centres are at SMK Pandan with 275 evacuees from 64 families from Lorong Haji Hussain Pandan 2, Seri Damai comunity hall with 21 victims from seven families from Kampung Seri Damai, while 32 evacuees from eight families from PPRT Kempadang are placed at SK Kempadang,” he said when contacted by Bernama, here.

Abdul Aziz confirmed that there were no flood-related accidents reported and all major roads closed yesterday have reopened.

Meanwhile, a flood operations room spokesman from the Pahang police headquarters confirmed there were no evacuees in other districts in the state.
