A standoff is taking place within the Kelana Jaya Customs Complex as activists led by Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) demand answers on the goods and services tax (GST).

The over 100 activists barged into the complex at 11.15am today armed with 106 questions regarding the new tax policy, and demanding it to be scrapped or postponed if they can’t be answered.

They were stopped just outside the complex’s GST information kiosk by members of the regular police, who were later joined by members of the Light Strike Force (LSF) from at least three police districts and the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), totalling over 60.

In discussions between the police and PSM secretary-general S Arulchelvan, the police promised to bring the Customs director-general to discuss with the group, but on the condition that the crowd waits outside the complex gate.

PSM declined the suggestion, but both then agreed to a compromise where the crowd would wait at a nearby corridor within the complex.

The situation is now calm, despite initial scuffles when the group was stopped at outside the information kiosk.
